COVID-19 Heroes: Kolkata Advisory branch

April 17, 2020

A few Sherus from the Kolkata Advisory branch
travelled long distances on two-wheelers for
work on March 23

Most of the employees of the Kolkata – Shakespeare Sarani branch in the cluster headed by Vivek Saraf started working remotely from March 18, 2020. However, the front-line employees and a few critical IT and Operations resources from the branch continued to come to the branch till March 26 to support and service the customers. They showed great courage and resourcefulness in the face of challenging lockdown conditions and this is their story.

Travelling to work when the rest of the city was slowly retreating home in fear of the novel Coronavirus was brave enough. But their challenges increased when on March 22 all public transport systems including taxis, buses, local trains and metros were cancelled in West Bengal. Many of the front-end staff could not make it to work on March 23. But a handful of Sherus including Ajoy Kumar Saraf, Alok Nath Ghosh, Arnab Dutta, Avijit Kundu, Chinmay Sarkar, Debasish Senapati, Dinabandhu Maity, Indrranil Senguptaa, Krishanu Podder, Manik Saha, Manojit Das, Monoj Adhikary, Mrinal Ghosh, Niladri Pramanick, Pankaj Kayan, Parthasarathi Basumallick, Prakash Jaiswal, Sagar Saha, Sanjay Tandon, Sayak Ghosh, Shreekant Sharma, Subrata Sarkar and Tapas Kumar Bhor reached the branch even that day to keep the business running under the able supervision of Group Head Nilesh Shah. Nilesh himself walked 3km to reach the branch. It was very crucial for him to make it to the branch on March 23 also because he had to plan for maximum employees to work from home from the following day, ie March 24.

The Sherus started very early from home to take advantage of low traffic conditions and less policemen on the road. Most of them travelled on two-wheelers from long distances, some even covering a distance of 55km from home to the branch. A few hired a private car to reach the branch. Besides carrying out the daily activities, they made arrangements using the available resources to implement the work-from-home policy. They completed all their work and left the branch around 4.00pm as the city slowly slid into a complete lockdown mode from 4.30pm. Three cheers for them all. They are all COVID-19 Heroes.
