Individual vs Family Floater – Which One Fits You?

  • Published Date: Sep 11, 2026 |Published by Team Mirae Asset Sharekhan
Insurance

In its simplest, most uncomplicated definition, insurance is essentially a form of financial security and protection. This kind of security comes in handy when one faces an unforeseen emergency or crisis which incurs equally unforeseen expenses.

What cannot be ignored, however, is the fact that medical and healthcare expenses are rising exponentially. As demand for specialty drugs, procedures, and surgical interventions has surged in the recent years, it can be safely assumed that they also incur exorbitant expenses for the patients. It is therefore in this sphere that insurance is most beneficial and therefore it is advisable to keep a solid cover of financial anchorage that can help to settle medical and healthcare expenses without taking away a sizable chunk of your own hard-earned savings.

Calculating the ideal coverage is something that requires some forethought and insight on its own, too, and you can learn how to do it here.

There are two alternatives available to an individual when it comes to buying health insurance. One can choose either an individual insurance policy or a family floater policy. What is the difference, one might ask. Let’s dive deeper into each of these concepts and how they differ from each other.

Individual Insurance

As its name suggests, an individual health insurance policy is designed to cover only 1 individual. The person who buys it is both the sole policyholder and the sole insured party. Some of the features of an individual insurance policy are as follows:

Each policy comes with a unique amount as its sum insured

The premium for an individual policy is calculated basis age, medical history, and other potential risk factors

Each individual policyholder is entitled only to specific advantages

Thus, an individual insurance policy seems simple to understand. Moreover, there is also the alternative of multi-individual insurance. This works best if you are to get multiple individuals insured at the same time.

Now that you have understood what individual insurance is, let’s understand what a family floater insurance policy is.

Family Floater Insurance

A family floater health insurance plan is, as its name suggests, designed to provide coverage to an entire family at the same time. Generally, the main policyholder, his or her spouse and dependent children are covered by a family floater policy. However, this isn’t always the case. Sometimes, a family floater policy can also include the policyholder’s parents as well as his or her in-laws. The total sum insured is distributed among all the insured members of the family in a family floater policy.

Now, there are a few subtle distinctions among the common types of family floater policies:

1. Nuclear Family: This type of family floater is ideally suitable for a small family comprising of a husband, wife, and one child.

2. Family with Dependent Parents: This type of family floater is applicable to a larger family that comprises, in addition to the members of the nuclear family, the policyholder’s dependent parents too. Since these last two members might be of an elderly or advanced age, it is likely that this type of family floater insurance is a little more expensive in terms of premiums and other costs.

Below are a few key features of family floater insurance:

- The base sum insured is distributed among all the insured members of the family.

- The premium is calculated based on the age of the eldest family member and their respective Pre-Existing Diseases, if any. These are considered as the main risk factors when it comes to the insurance advantages being offered.

- On a general level, the combined premiums are less expensive than those of multiple individual policies, which is the primary advantage of a family floater plan.

So, now that we have seen what these two types of health insurance mean, let’s compare their respective pros and cons before deciding how to buy a health insurance policy.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Individual Insurance

1. The biggest advantage of an individual health insurance policy has is that the policyholder has complete access to the advantages of the policy. Thus, he or she doesn’t have to share those advantages with anyone else.

2. An individual health policy’s benefits can be customised as per the policyholder’s preferences and convenience.

3. An individual’s claim to the benefits will not affect in any way the coverage provided to other individuals in a multi-individual insurance policy.

4. With an individual insurance policy, it is also easier for the policyholder to switch to another health insurance online, which could offer better advantages. There are no constraints in doing the same; moreover, you can also realise fully the advantages such as waiting period credits and no-claim bonuses.

5. In addition to the above, an individual health policy qualifies you to claim tax deductions under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act. Thus, this option becomes a smart way to capitalise on health insurance tax benefit Section 80D. You can find out here how this works.

While these advantages would convince you to buy an individual health insurance policy, there are some disadvantages of the same:

1. The actual premiums to pay might accumulate and become more expensive in case of multiple individual policies.

2. Again, if multiple policies have been availed for many individuals, it can get quite cumbersome to track all their renewals at the same time.

3. Moreover, in case of individual policies, the premiums can get expensive for older individuals or even those who have pre-existing diseases. This nullifies an individual insurance policy as a senior citizen health insurance plan.

Let’s turn our attention to what a family floater health insurance plan has to offer.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Family Floater Insurance

1. With a family floater insurance policy in hand, an entire family is protected with insurance cover in one go. This makes it easy for any one of the policyholders to manage the insurance advantages and other facilities easily.

2. Family floater insurance plans are generally among the most cost-effective health insurance plans for family. This is because only a single premium amount needs to be paid for coverage for the whole family.

3. Moreover, there is a greater capacity for better coverage and more insurance benefits for the family members to access in a family floater policy.

Having said that, a family floater policy comes with its own share of disadvantages:

1. While cost-effective, by default, the premium in the policy is determined based on the age of the eldest family member. Thus, this makes it a little higher than that of a multi-individual policy, though there are also no-age slabs that charge premiums based on ages of all the members covered.

2. The insured sum might not suffice for adequate coverage for all the family members insured by the policy. To counter this, however, the policyholder might opt for a plan with unlimited restoration advantages.

3. As said even before, most family floater policies do not cover even the parents of the policyholders, though this can be accommodated with a top-up health insurance plan or plans with additional benefits.

The Verdict

So, of the two options given, what should be the health insurance plan that you should opt for?

Ultimately, it all depends on your own unique profile as well as on whether you have a large family of dependents or are living individually. In the latter case, an individual policy would work fine enough, and you can search for an appropriate one among the best health insurance plans in India to suit your requirements. If you are married or have at least one child, multiple individual policies could also suffice.

However, if you are a member of a larger family, having more than one child dependent on you and also with parents or in-laws, it would make much more sense to opt for a family floater policy that also enables you to avail cashless health insurance for all medical requirements.

Ultimately, before you choose a suitable health insurance plan, make sure that you also make your choice based on what’s the waiting period for the policy, you can learn and understand how this works.
