Indian benchmark indices, the Sensex and Nifty, opened higher on Friday after Thursday's sharp selloff pushed the Nifty to its lowest level of 2026. While bargain buying support sentiment, weak Asian markets, elevated crude oil prices, rising global bond yields and foreign institutional selling could cap gains.
At 9:20 AM on October 9, the Sensex was up 310 points at 71,910, while the Nifty gained 0.47% to 22,333.
Rupee Check
The Indian rupee opened marginally higher at 96.71 per dollar, compared with the previous close of 96.77.
Global Update
Asian equities traded lower on Friday as elevated energy prices and rising bond yields weighed on sentiment. MSCI's broad Asia-Pacific index outside Japan fell 0.16%, while Japan's Nikkei declined more than 1%. Markets in South Korea and Taiwan were closed for holidays.
Wall Street ended lower overnight. The Nasdaq Composite fell 1.25% to 27,193.34, the S&P 500 slipped 0.47% to 7,765.36, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average edged up 0.10% to 51,231.64.
