Post Market Update- Sensex plunges 605 points, Nifty below 25,700

Stocks in the news-

1. Tata Power commissions 400/220 kV transmission line and substation at Greater Noida with 1,000 MVA transformation capacity.

Indian indices-

Indian markets succumbed to selling pressure for the fifth consecutive session on January 09, 2026. By the end of the day, both the Sensex and Nifty closed near their session lows and registered the worst week fall since September 2025. BSE Midcap index shed 0.90%, while smallcap index fell 1.74%. Among sectors, except IT, PSU Bank, Oil & Gas, all other indices ended lower. At close, the Sensex was down 604.72 points or 0.72% at 83,576.24, and the Nifty was down 193.55 points or 0.75% at 25,683.30.

Rupee ended at 90.16/$ against January 08, 2026, close of 90.02/$.

Buzzing stocks on BSE-

1. Andhra Cements surged 4.90% to Rs. 72.35, as promoter to sell stake via OFS.

2. Elecon Engineering Company declined 15.79% to Rs. 423.15, after it reported a consolidated profit after tax (PAT) of Rs. 72 crores in the December quarter (Q3FY26), compared to Rs. 108 crores in the same quarter of the previous year (Y-o-Y).

3. Indian Energy Exchange (IEX) fell 7.76% to Rs. 138.45, after APTEL deferred hearing on market coupling norms to January 19.

Global Signals-

Defense stocks across Asia climbed, as investors digested the ongoing political tension.

European markets were trading in positive territory.
